We live in a world today where people believe that they can do the bare minimum and be given all the fruits of life. Why should you have to work for anything, when everything is given to you. We’re creating a society of people who believe that just for participating they need a trophy.
I remember when I was young I would ride my bicycle to school, carrying my heavy backpack and my instrument for band. It wasn’t easy navigating to school, but I had to get to each day and it was my responsibility to be there on time. I didn’t have anybody driving me because my mom was at work, nor did we have a system of buses, picking us up and dropping us off.
Fast forward to today. This morning I was walking my dog and saw a mom walking her son to school. The mom was carrying the sons backpack while the sun was busy looking at a phone. I had to stop and think for a moment. what a disservice, the mother was doing to her son. He didn’t understand that it was his responsibility to carry his backpack. She was being the helicopter parent that wouldn’t allow her son to sweat or work to get himself to school. What are we doing to our children nowadays when we allow them to believe that just for showing up they should get a trophy. Should we be teaching our children, the importance of hard work, determination, and ethics? It seems that I am in the minority nowadays that is the responsibility of the parents to teach children values. School teachers are expected to teach children, manners and social behaviors, and the parents can just sit back, staring at their phones while everyone else does that work for them.
It’s our responsibility to ensure that our children grow up decent members of society. Too many people allow their kids to do whatever they want because they don’t feel it’s important to parent. Parents shouldn’t be friends to their children, they should be parents.
It’s all of our responsibilities to ensure the success of the next generation
